Culinary trip: Day1!
This Christmas we decided that rather than paying tons of money to dine out on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, we could spend the money going for a culinary trip instead. After a lot of research we had our shortlist and started our effort to actually plan this. We wanted to go to a restaurant in Northern France which many experts consider to be one of the next great stars, one restaurant in Belgium that is the modern version of an inn, and one of the best restaurants in the Netherlands. We also wanted to spend a couple of days in Amsterdam, maybe Antwerp… We had a lot of plans :)
Well the Grenouillere made it easy for us; they only had availability on Friday and then they would close for 3 weeks for the Christmas holidays. We booked it immediately and planned the rest of the trip around this booking and around the fact that most restaurants are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
This is our first day, but stay tuned for the rest. We arrived in Calais at noon after a smooth and easy tunnel crossing. La Grenouillere  is quite old but has started getting noticed after the original owner’s son returned and took over in 2003. It’s a restaurant with rooms and recently they added some wonderful huts which is what we chose. We settled in and relaxed before dinner, enjoying the wood stove and watching the flame from the restaurant’s fireplace from afar. The restaurant itself is quite interesting, with the low lighting, the chains hanging above the open kitchen and the nice surroundings setting the tone. We had the tasting menu which was very good overall. My favourite dishes were the (signature dish of) lobster which arrives in a flaming bush of juniper and which you are advised to eat with your hands and of course the grenouilleres (frog’s legs)!
After a very comfortable sleep we had breakfast and left for our next destination, Slouis in the Netherlands.
